Meet The Editor

Hi there, internet friend and Lady reader!

I'm Wendi Nunnery and I'm the Founding Editor of Lady Literary Magazine, a digital publication created for women by women. I started Lady because I know what it's like to be a writer who can't stop putting words on paper or hoping one day she'll find an audience for her work. I also know what it's like to be a woman in a world where stories written by men are far too often considered "literary" and stories written by women are branded "chick lit" or simply "women's fiction." Call me revolutionary, but I labor under the impression that fiction is fiction, stories are stories, and writing is writing, regardless of authorship. Audience matters, of course, but talent is talent regardless of genitalia.

So...you might be wondering why I created a publication called Lady? Good question.

Lady is a feminist publication insofar as it offers a unique outlet for women who are also writers. We are not merely women writers. We are women. And we are writers. We are human beings with stories to tell, and Lady is a place where these stories find a home. Yes, Lady only accepts work from female authors, but this is not because we believe male authors are unworthy. (That's not feminism. That's sexism.) We do it because male authors have historically been given the privilege of merit far more often than women simply because they are men. And, even in 2017, it can be a challenge for a woman's work to be valued in the same way a man's work is valued. Lady is an effort to lift up voices that might not be heard otherwise.

And, hey, if you're a man:

Your readership is welcome here. In fact, it is encouraged. (I hope you laughed when you read that because you realize the ridiculousness of making such a statement. But it's a question I have been asked, so I might as well address it.)

As for me, I am a writer and reader, through and through. I'm the author of The Best Kept Secret and The Next Best Thing, a young adult series, as well as a blogger for The Huffington Post. For the last five years, I have worked as a freelance writer and my work has been featured in Mother Writers, The Simply Beloved, Introvert, Dear, and SUSIE Magazine. I'm currently working on my first non-fiction book proposal, so I'm sure that will keep me busy for awhile. Please send coffee.

I am a proud alumna of Georgia Southern University and an Oxford comma disciple. In truth, I will probably reject your submission if you don't use it. (JK, but SERIOUSLY. Use it.) For eight years, I have been married to another wonderful introvert and, together, we parent an extroverted three-year-old who never meets a stranger. She is the best thing I have ever created, and the sweetest story I will ever write.

I also love Jesus and use a lot of colorful language, two things I don't find mutually exclusive in the least.
