Poetry: "One time use only" by April Gauthier

A thousand cigarettes were smoked
and ashes burned
Like words that were held together
By symphonies
Every note you played christened me
In the smoke

You preyed on me
Rolled me over your tongue
Like you were just getting out of bed
In the mourning
Over open flame
While rats crawled from the ceiling
I was nothing over this impermanence
Richly grown from dirt
For your desire
Rolled and compacted into
Your desperate fingers
Sucked and flicked
Until disintegration
Left in the ashes
Of all the others

But you chose me
